Sumter County Emergency Medical Services currently operates 7 Ambulances daily staffed with 2 certified personnel; We operate 1 QRV (quick response vehicle) which is staffed by the Shift Supervisor, who is a Paramedic. Sumter County EMS operates out of 4 stations located in different parts of the County.

Sumter County EMS has 15 licensed Ambulances which allows for a spare ambulance for each crew in the event of unforeseen mechanical problems or routine maintenance.

Sumter County EMS is a licensed Intermediate Life Support system through our regulatory body, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. This means we can provide Advanced Life Support. Due to critically low numbers of EMS Providers across the country, EMS systems are struggling to meet the requirement to have a Paramedic on every Ambulance all the time. Our Shift Supervisor is able to provide Advanced Life Support back-up when needed in the event a Paramedic is unavailable on the Ambulance.

Sumter County EMS responds to approximately 22,000 calls for service annually and transports approximately 18,000 people annually.

Sumter County EMS has a state approved training program to help our personnel maintain their certifications to provide Emergency Medical Care to the community. Staff attends regular training seminars, from a minimum of 4 hours up to a maximum of 8 hours depending on the topic.

Sumter County EMS provides coverage for special events in our community. A request must be made at least 2 weeks prior to the event for us to attempt to accommodate your request. EMS also participates in community job fairs throughout Sumter County to better help people to understand what EMS does in the community. If you need special event coverage please contact Maj. Scott Dunlap, Capt. Mary Pack, or Lt. Kimberly Graham. They can all be reached by the following ways:

Sumter County EMS operates a Special Operations Team which is in place to respond to incidents of mass destruction, hazardous materials incidents, or scenes where EMS will have to remain for an extended period of time and establish a command post.
