Historical Commission:The mission of the Sumter County Historical Commission is to encourage the study and transmission of the history of Sumter County and to identify and protect its historical resources. In carrying out its responsibilities, the Historical Commission has engaged in and/or supported such activities as the following: • Developing the site of the Battle of Dingle's Mill (April 9, 1865)• Subvention of research and publication expenses for books on Sumter County's history • Assistance in preservation of historic places • Support for efforts to clear and preserve old cemeteries in the county • Support for preservationist activity by the Sumter High School "Hands On History" program • Marking the major sites involved in Potter's Raid (April, 1865) and publishing and distributing a brochure to guide tourists along Potter's trail • Publishing a brochure on the Thomas Sumter Memorial Park In addition, the Commission is engaged in several ongoing activities of its own initiation, including the following: • Identifying and recording the locations of African-American cemeteries in Sumter County. • Identifying the sites of schools for African-American children during the era of segregation, and marking each with a suitable marker. The Commission is the coordinating agency for state historical markers in the County, and is responsible for erecting and maintaining them. The Commission owns, and is responsible for maintaining, the Singleton family cemetery and a portion of the Dingle's Mill battlefield. The Commission has plans for other projects for which it is now preparing the groundwork. These plans are at varying stages of development. They include at present the following: • Further development of the Dingle's Mill battlefield into a suitable memorial and park • Creation of a Thomas Sumter Trail • Identifying and marking sites of significance in the American Revolution beyond those specifically associated with Thomas Sumter • Development of a "March to Freedom" trail, commemorating the self-emancipation of some 5000 slaves from Sumter and surrounding counties in April of 1865 • A commemorative project, connected to the Colored Schools project, on broader aspects of African American education in the days of segregation The Commission has been identified as Sumter County's liaison to the new Francis Marion Trail Commission.
