Electronic Waste Recycling

Do you have an obsolete computer or television in your home?  If so, you can now recycle them in Sumter along with other electronic waste (E-waste).   Sumter County will collect E-waste on the first Saturday of each month beginning in October at the Sumter County Public Works department.   In addition, E-waste will not be accepted at the Sumter County Recycling Centers beginning October 1st.

Electronic equipment that will be accepted on the E-waste recycling day(s) and not at the county recycling centers includes the following:

  • Computers

  • Cameras
  • Microwave Ovens

  • Digital Versatile Discs (DVDs)

With an ample supply of newer, faster electronic products on the market, Americans continually replace older models. This trend shows no signs of slowing. As a result, electronics have become one of the fastest growing “waste streams” or portions of our trash.

It is important to recycle electronics for a number of reasons.  First, it is prohibited in the state of South Carolina to dispose of E-waste in a C&D landfill.  E-waste can contain hazardous materials that can enter the environment if disposed of improperly.  Roadside dumping and burning can allow heavy metals and toxic compounds to infiltrate into the soil, air, and water.  Heavy metals such as lead and mercury have the ability to leach out of electronic devices under certain environmental conditions.  These materials can cause a number of health problems in humans and wildlife.  Electronics recycling also helps recover reusable raw materials, conserves limited landfill space, and creates jobs.

Although power tools and other small household items with a plug (toaster, lamp, iron, blender, etc.) can be disposed of at the recycling centers, we will also accept these items along with the E-waste listed above for recycling on the first Saturday of each month beginning in October.  Large appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, etc.) will not be accepted at the E-waste recycling event.  Large appliances are accepted at the county recycling centers or C&D landfill at no charge to residents.

So gather up those old computers and televisions sitting in your garage and bring them to Sumter County Public Works located at 1289 North Main Street on the first Saturday of each month beginning in October.   For more information call Sumter County Public Works at 436-2241.

Electronic waste is accepted six days a week at the e-waste collection site located at the Sumter County Landfill.  See landfill attendant on duty for instructions.  The landfill is located at 2185 East Brewington Road.   Hours of operation:  Mon – Sat 7:30 am – 4:00pm
