    About Sumter County

Sumter County is right in the heart of South Carolina.

Rich in history with a forward thinking and progressive spirit, Sumter County has a diverse population of native South Carolinians and transplants alike who enjoy the mild weather, low cost of living, friendly neighborhoods and many cultural offerings.

We’re proud of the growth of our industrial and manufacturing base – and the high-paying jobs they bring – but we’re also well known for our agricultural heritage and as the home of Shaw Air Force Base.

Our namesake, General Thomas Sumter, lived nearly a century and heroically fought back the British during the Revolutionary War, earning the nickname of the “Fighting Gamecock,” before serving as a statesman and planter.

It was Sumter, in fact, who sought to make Stateburg the capital of South Carolina, as it lies geographically at the center of the Palmetto state. We enjoy the county’s High Hills of the Santee and close proximity to Columbia and the coast, while the mountains in the Upstate are only a short drive away.

Sumter County is a tight knit and family-oriented community with numerous recreational opportunities for sports fans and lovers of the great outdoors.
