A life-long resident of Sumter, South Carolina, Councilman Jimmy Byrd, was born in 1970.
He is the son of James and Carolyn Byrd.
Councilman Byrd graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. He also served as the Student Government President during his tenure at USC-Sumter. Councilman Byrd served as President of the USC Sumter Alumni Association from 2008-2010.
On December 19, 2006, he was Certified by the S. C. Election Commission to serve as a Council member for Sumter County Council’s District #3. Councilman Byrd was elected during the November 2008 election to serve his first full term on Sumter County Council.
In his capacity on Sumter County Council, Councilman Byrd has served as the Chairman of the Internal Affairs Committee and member of the City-County Liaison Committee, the Public Safety Committee, and the Technology/Personnel Committee. He is also a member of the SUATS Committee, Shaw-Sumter Community Council, and the Sumter School Transition Committee. Additionally, Councilman Byrd represents Council as the Educational Liaison.
Councilman Byrd has been honored as the recipient of the Ronald Reagan Activist Award in 1996. He is also a graduate of the South Carolina Association Of Counties Institute Classes, Level I; and a 2002 graduate from the S. C. Economic Developer’s School, Tate Center, College Of Charleston Business College during 2007.
Councilman Jimmy Byrd is married to his wife, Candice. They are active members of Bethesda Church of God.
