Naomi D. Sanders, former Chairwoman of Sumter County Council, was born on June 26, 1939.
She is the daughter of the late Rev. A. D. Dennis and the late Mrs. Sarah Alston Dennis. She is married to Mr. Roosevelt Sanders and they have one daughter, Marilyn A. Sanders.
Mrs. Sanders graduated from Ebenezer High School and she attended Johnson Business School, Washington D.C., Morris College, Sumter, S.C., and Sumter Beauty College, Sumter, S.C. Mrs. Sanders is an entrepreneur as the owner and operator of Naomi's Beauty Salon.
She served on the Sumter County School District #2 Board of Trustee for eighteen years, and Mrs. Sanders served as Chairman of the School Board of Trustees for three years. Also, she served on the South Carolina School Board Association as Director for ten years and worked as the Secretary and the Treasurer for this Association during her tenure as a School Board Trustee. She was first elected to Sumter County Council in November of 1996 and was first sworn in as Councilwoman on January 4, 1997.
Mrs. Sanders has also served Council as Vice Chairwoman from 1999 until January 2003. She was elected as the first woman ever to serve in the capacity of chairman for Sumter County Council on January 2003.
Mrs. Sanders is a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Rembert, South Carolina, and is also a member of the NAACP, NCNW, and the FORUM
